Arriving empty-handed — especially on a first visit or a festival — can read as thoughtless.
Why: The Book of Rites states the principle outright: 礼尚往来 — courtesy flows both ways. Your host feeds you and opens their home; a gift restores the balance and signals that you value the relationship. That is why the tradition says the gift’s worth is in the 意 (thought), not the price tag.
Today: Fully alive today: urban Chinese still bring fruit, tea, or cake when visiting. Among very close young friends the formality may drop — but a first visit or a holiday visit without a gift still gets noticed.
