Why Dates Matter in Chinese Business
Numerology and auspicious timing are deeply embedded in Chinese business culture, even among educated, modern professionals. The number 8 (八, bā) sounds like "prosperity" (发, fā) and is universally preferred. The number 4 (四, sì) sounds like "death" (死, sǐ) and is avoided for anything important.
Specific dates in the Chinese lunar calendar also carry significance. Key national holidays create blackout periods for business. The weeks around Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) are widely considered inappropriate for new agreements.
Proposing a contract signing on the 8th or 18th of a month signals cultural awareness — a small gesture that earns real goodwill. Inadvertently scheduling on the 4th signals carelessness, even if no one mentions it.
