Why Chinese Communication Works This Way
Chinese communication is high-context — meaning is carried by relationship, setting, and implication, not just words. The listener is expected to read the situation and infer intent. Saying exactly what you mean is often considered blunt, selfish, or even rude.
This creates a system where "no" is almost never said, disagreement is signalled by silence or vague affirmation, and maintaining the other person's face (面子) is the first priority in any response.
The result: foreigners who speak perfect Mandarin still miss 80% of the conversation because they are listening to the words, not the subtext.
